Trying to Fix TR7 Electric Power Steering & Screwing Up Royally

The electric power steering had stopped working, so naturally we set about making it worse before we made it better. It started with a bit of a mess and a blown fuse, and quickly turned into a hunt for one specific broken wire in a loom that 1996 clearly designed as a practical joke.

The real low point was me connecting the battery the wrong way around and popping a few more fuses for good measure. In my defense, the right way and the wrong way look remarkably similar at the wrong time of night.

Help arrived from the TR7 Owners’ Club on Facebook, who pointed us at the right part. Eddie did the honors and actually got the steering working again, which I am choosing to read as proof he’s the real mechanic in this family.

Or maybe he’s the only one who pays attention. I should listen more. I hear that a lot.
